The rise in drug overdose deaths in Montgomery County has been attributed to the increased use of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid[5]. The annual number of fentanyl overdoses in Ohio increased from 503 in 2014 to 1,155 in 2015, and over the same period, the total annual overdose deaths in Ohio also increased[1]. However, Ohio has taken steps to address the issue of substance abuse, including launching new data dashboards to track data on overdose deaths and other substance-use measures for all of the state’s 88 counties[6]. These efforts are crucial in combating substance abuse and reducing the number of overdose deaths in Montgomery County.

Despite the severity of the substance abuse problem in Montgomery County, there are several resources available for those struggling with substance abuse. Hospitals in the county have seen a 26% increase in patient encounters for behavioral health needs in area emergency departments since 2019[7]. The county also has an Inventory of Substance Use and Mental Health Treatment Facilities (I-TF) that provides information on treatment services[8]. These resources are essential in providing individuals with the support and treatment they need to overcome substance abuse issues and lead healthier lives.
