Highland County Ohio Substance Abuse Statistics

Highland County, Ohio has been struggling with substance abuse for years, with drug overdose deaths being a significant concern[1]. According to the Ohio Substance Use Monitoring Network (OSAM), Highland County is facing a substance abuse epidemic[2]. The county has seen a decrease in drug overdose deaths from 16 in 2022 to eight in 2023[1]. However, the numbers are still alarming, and there is a need for continued efforts to combat substance abuse in the county.

The commonly abused substances in Highland County include opioids, methamphetamine, and alcohol[3]. Opioid abuse has been a significant problem in the county, with prescription drug abuse leading to more heroin addiction[1]. Meth use was also prevalent in the county before the opioid crisis[3]. The recent survey of Highland County students on substance abuse revealed that marijuana is the most commonly used substance among students, followed by alcohol and vaping[4].

The data collected from the survey highlights the need for early interventions and prevention efforts to address substance abuse among youth in the county.

Substance abuse has a significant impact on the community, including increased crime rates, healthcare costs, and decreased productivity[1]. The multifactorial, multigenerational inheritance of addiction and substance use disorders makes it challenging to address the issue[5]. However, there are possible solutions that can help combat substance abuse in Highland County. The introduction of Senate Bill 205, which aims to combat substance abuse, is a step in the right direction[6]. The $1 million grant being used to implement evidence-based practices and develop potential models for communities to use in addressing substance abuse is another positive initiative[7]. There is also a need for increased access to evidence-based treatment and wrap-around services for individuals struggling with substance abuse[5]. By implementing a comprehensive approach that addresses prevention, treatment, and recovery, Highland County can make progress in combating substance abuse and improving the health and well-being of its residents.
