Fulton County Ohio Substance Abuse Statistics
Fulton County, Ohio, has not been immune to the substance abuse epidemic that has swept the nation in recent years[1]. According to a report by the Ohio Department of Health, the prevalence of substance abuse in Fulton County is higher than the state average[2]. The report also reveals that the county has a higher rate of drug overdose deaths compared to the state average. Furthermore, the county has seen an increase in the number of opioid-related overdose deaths in recent years[3].
While various substances are abused in Fulton County, opioids are the most commonly abused[1]. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), in 2021, 9.7% of the county’s population reported using opioids for non-medical purposes[4]. The same survey also revealed that 58% of high school students in Fulton County have consumed alcohol, with 22% having done so in the last 30 days[5].
The report also highlighted an overlap of mental health issues and probabilities for co-occurring substance abuse and chronic homelessness[6]. However, a survey conducted by the Fulton County Health Department in 2019 showed a decrease in drug use by teens compared to 2005[7].
Efforts to address substance abuse in Fulton County have been ongoing. The county has established several prevention and treatment programs to address the issue, including the Fulton County Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Board, which provides funding for addiction treatment and prevention programs[1]. Additionally, the county has implemented a drug court program that provides treatment as an alternative to incarceration for non-violent drug offenders. The program aims to reduce recidivism rates and help participants overcome their addiction[1]. The county also participates in the Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System (OARRS), which allows healthcare providers and pharmacists to monitor patients’ prescription drug use and identify potential abuse or misuse[4]. However, given the complexity of opioid use and abuse, addressing substance abuse in Fulton County requires a multifaceted approach that involves community engagement, education, and collaboration among various stakeholders[3].
